Chris Fraser uses the camera obscura as a point of departure, pursuing an experience of light that engages the unseen in everyday phenomena.  Using a small set of simple tools, he makes room for curiosity, inviting viewers to speculate about the nature of the world and their relationship to it.  Fraser has had recent solo exhibitions at Disjecta in Portland, OR, the Center for Contemporary Art in Sacramento, CA and Highlight Gallery in San Francisco.  He participated in Bay Area Now 6 at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and was featured in Personal Structures at the Palazzo Bembo as part of the 55th Venice Biennale.  He received an MFA in Studio Art from Mills College in Oakland, CA and a BA in History from the University of California, Davis.  Fraser is a recipient of the Jay DeFeo Prize, was awarded a graduate fellowship at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, CA, and was a resident artist at the Djerassi Resident Artist Program in Woodside, CA.  He is currently developing various spaces that treat architecture as an extension of the body. *Artist biography at time of award.
