Ana Teresa Fernandez

Ana Teresa Fernandez was born and raised in Tampico, Mexico. Her work explores the politics of “intersectionality” and how it shapes personal identity, culture, and social rhetoric through painting, performance, and video. She explores the psychological and physical barriers defining gender, race, and class in Western society and the global south. Fernandez received an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2006. Her work has been shown at the Tijuana Biennial in Mexico, the Snite Museum at University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and the Oakland Museum. Her large-scale “5W” public art project in San Francisco was awarded Best of the Bay by 7×7 Magazine in 2013. She has participated in residencies at La Fragua in Cordoba, Spain, Greatmore Art Center in Capetown, South Africa, Sant D’Art Jakmel in Haiti, and the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, CA (where she was a Tournesol Award Recipient). Her films have been screened at the Woodstock Film Festival, the Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto, and the Honolulu International Film Festival were she was awarded the Gold Kahuna Award for Best Experimental Short. Fernandez recently completed a series of five large public art light installations in downtown San Francisco, and will have a 2014 residency in Sao Paulo, Brazil. *Artist biography at time of award.
